Belize, A Truly Spectacular Vacation Spot!

Belize is located next to Mexico and Guatemala in Central America. Its shores are lined by the Caribbean Sea, and it's a beautiful tourist destination that is often ignored. Belize is mainly Creole, and the people are peaceful, friendly, and welcome tourists. Many find this a nice change from some of the Caribbean destinations where tourists often feel unwelcome.

Belize is a lazy, relaxed, laid back place where wrist watches almost have no meaning. Many westerners find it hard to adjust to this after their hectic city lifestyle. Another feather in Belize's cap is that it is an English speaking place making one and all feel comfortable.

One thing to be aware of is that Belize is one of the more expensive places to visit in Central America. However, in comparison to many destination spots, you can still lodge and play here even if you are confined to a budget. Accommodations run the gamut from luxury resorts, to hostels, and inexpensive hotels.

Belize is great for the outdoor lover. You'll find protected natural habitats, as well as coral reefs and rainforests. Fish and mammals abound so nature lovers will be in their element. If archeology is your passion you won't want to miss the ancient Mayan ruins. You can schedule day trips with tour guide agencies and learn much about the meanings of the ruins as well as their rich history.

Lamanai is a Mayan site that is a must see. It consists of 60 or so structures that were inhabited from 1500 BC until the Spanish arrived. To reach this site you must take a 90 minute boat trip where you can see plenty of species of birds along with crocodiles. Xunantunich is another archaeological site that holds much history and is a fascinating area.

You can indulge in snorkelling or scuba diving at the Belize Reef and the Cayes, which is the longest reef in Western Hemisphere. Belize's underwater world displays a very colourful reef and showcases many beautiful examples of marine life such as tropical fish.

The tropical weather in Belize is generally hot and humid particularly in summers, though the evenings tend to get a little cold. Therefore, while packing all tourists must make considerations of the weather and include a few sweaters besides the host of shorts, t-shirts and bathing suits.

To get to Belize you can travel to the international airport in Belize City from several major airports in the United States as well as from most Central American cities. The best time to go to Belize is from November to May or June. July to November is hurricane season so you may be tempting fate. In addition, the temperatures and humidity during the summer and fall months can be almost unbearable, especially if you have your heart set on visiting some archaeological sites.

Be sure to consider a visit to the small but beautiful country of Belize. It offers a variety of activities including just soaking up the sun at the beach, exploring a terrific underwater paradise, and seeing some amazing history created by its original citizens.
