Best Man Wedding Speeches - Or: How To Preserve Your Friendship To The Groom

You're the best man for your best friend and with that comes the questionable privilege to give the best of all best man wedding speeches. Your friend's wedding is in four months. You are pretty close to being done dealing with your mixed feelings about his marriage and the fact that things won't be the same for your friendship afterwards. But you want him to be happy, so you're more than willing to give the speech of your life.

For a month or two you won't even remember about the speech; still got so much time. Then something wedding related pops up in a conversation and you remember. You make a mental note; maybe even scribble a few illegible words on a napkin. Your speech will be one of those funny best man wedding speeches. You lose the napkin.

The next three weeks just seem to fly by and a feeling of pressure is settling in: you do still need to get something written down. You're an organized kind of guy, so you plan on taking Saturday morning. A plan is always good. Friday afternoon the phone rings, and your best friend asks you to help him pick up that couch for the new apartment. Hey, sure you're going to help. You had something else planned for Saturday, you memory faintly prompts. Well couldn't have been very important after all, or you'd have remembered, right?

Another week goes by; when during the fitting of the tux the thought shoots up your spine and into your stomach: you still got squat when it comes to best man wedding speeches. Now what? The wedding is just days away.

You don't dare asking your other friends for advice. Wouldn't they have a field day with this? So you finally get over yourself and go ask your dad. He's happy to help you and gives you a few pointers. You scribble them down, turn the page this way and that. Start writing your own thing, but it just won't flow. After wasting an entire yellow pad you're drenched in the sweat of desperation and ready to thrown in the towel and go confess.

Ehh, no, not yet. You remember your mom had a book from way back when that had best man wedding speeches examples, or was it groom's? Who cares? You go digging for the book and yes, it's still around and yes, the speeches were for the groom. - If this comes close to describing your life lately . . . you need a plan.

When you write a wedding speech you need a structure on which to build. Write yourself a list of your favorite things about your friend and include the bride in there too. Write down another short list of some great anecdotes from your past together. It's always great to be funny, but icky or embarrassing moments are better left out. Never lose sight of the feelings of both bride and groom (and anybody else present).

Begin focusing on the couple and point out some of the things that make them a great couple. Follow that up with a sweep through the past, from when you first knew your friend and uncover some memories to share with everybody (don't forget: tasteful and funny). Then you could go over the first moments in the couple's relationship from your own perspective (stay with the official version). Throughout weave in nice details about the bride and the groom. Project their happy future together and your very important part in that and . . . close with a witty toast. Altogether, don't go too long. Short and sweet is always best.

So here's one structure you could use. Fill it out with your memories and experiences and you will have a wedding speech ready to go and concise to boot. One word of advice though: Never embarrass anyone present when doing best man wedding speeches. It would quickly dampen the spirit of the celebration and could do permanent damage to your friendship. If you want your friendship with both of them to last a life-time, stay on the good side of the bride.
