Best Migraine Treatment?

To quickly let you know there is no such thing as best migraine treatment! Do not believe anyone that claims that such thing exists!

In real life, and in medicine of course, there are simply things that work, and things that don’t! Things that work for certain people and things that don’t work (the gravity rule, as far as I know works for everybody but that’s another story!).

Here I would like to go over some of the treatments for migraine that are
available and remind you that the disease is of unknown origin and therefore some treatment options can stop the migraine in certain individuals but will not do anything in others.

First we have the treatment with pharmacologic agents, meaning drugs!
These consist of simple pain-killers (aspirin, paracetamol, ibuprofen) alone or in combination with caffeine, opioids and other agents.
Then there are other categories of drugs that are in use like the antiemetics, triptans and ergot derivatives. Drugs are given to certain individuals as a prophylactic means too. That is to protect them against a forthcoming migraine attack as prevention is always better than cure!

As I mentioned earlier there is a variety of drugs available for migraine treatment but unfortunately some people tend to suffer from recurring migraine attacks despite pharmacologic treatment.
Some alternative pathways for the treatment of migraines have been developed that actually have helped people to avoid excessive drug prescription and consumption.

One of them is… Massage! This wonderful way of relaxing, although it has not proved scientifically that cures migraine, can help certain people to relieve head pressure and tension.

Another option is acupuncture where very thin long needles are inserted in your skin-not deeply! - at certain spots of your body. There has been some evidence of positive effects but not enough for physicians to routinely advise for it.

Biofeedback on the other hand has showed efficient relief from the migraine pain. Biofeedback is a relaxation technique that uses special tools to teach someone about certain body responses and how to either control them or stop them before occurring aggressively. An example would be for someone to learn to be aware of muscle tension and stress.

There are some herbs that have been proven to offer some migraine relief. These are feverfew and butterbur. Co enzyme Q10 supplements along with high doses of vitamin B2 have shown some moderate efficacy but you should ask your doctor before you take any of them. Especially feverfew and butterbur are not to be taken by pregnant women.

There are also some other methods and substances for migraine treatment but before you take any of them, or the ones discussed above, please consult your doctor.
