Bicycle Safety Basics
Safety First Protective gear is the first thing you should consider. At the very least, buy a good-fitting helmet and be sure to use the attached strap. If your helmet falls off in an accident, it’s not going to protect you from serious injury. Other good equipment pieces to consider wearing are gloves, mouthguards and pads for your elbows and knees. Be Visible Other drivers may have trouble seeing your bike when you ride, depending on the road and weather conditions. Help them by adding reflectors, lights and colorful flags to make your bike stand out. Also, learn and use proper turn signals--left arm straight out for a left turn or held up at a 90 degree angle to turn right. Rules of the Road Always ride your bicycle on the right side of the road, with traffic, and make sure to obey stop signs and traffic signals. Leave the sidewalk for pedestrians. Another good rule of the road: stay alert to traffic at least three or four cars ahead so sudden movements and open doors don’t catch you off guard.
