Big Pun Mixtapes-the Early Years
Big Punisher was born Christopher Carlos Rios and lived in the New York City neighborhood of South Bronx for most of his childhood. He had a very troubled childhood which included witnessing his mother using drugs and his father dying. He developed a lot of rage as a young man and eventually dropped out of high school, living on the streets and writing raps for Big Punisher mixtapes. In the 1980s he was not yet a household name, but there were already several Big Punisher mixtapes released under the name Big Moon Dawg. The hip hop mixtape format worked out well for him and he eventually caught the attention of Fat Joe in 1995. Fat Joe gave him his first professional rapping opportunity by letting him appear on his second album, Jealous Ones Envy. In 1997, Big Punisher scored his first hit single, “I’m Not A Player.” The song earned quite a lot of attention for both the rapper and Knobody, the producer who remixed it. It became the first major hit that Big Punisher could claim, setting his career off in the right direction. Even after all of the Big Punisher mixtapes and scoring a hit single, Big Punisher had quite a way to go before he would become a rap superstar. His experiences growing up in the South Bronx helped shape him and prepare him for a career in the hip hop industry. His first single, “I’m Not A Player”, set the stage for a truly remarkable career.
