Biker’s Tips To Prepare For Winter
The Department of Transport states that, between December of 2008 and March of 2009, 1,299 bikers were seriously injured or killed. This is largely due to the fact that road conditions are far worse in winter than during the rest of the year. The following are a series of tips that will allow you to be safe during the winter months: 1. Make sure that the bike is regularly maintained in accordance with the handbook that is provided by the manufacturer of the bike. 2. During winter, salt on the road can become lodged in the bolts, brake calipers, and metal and degrades the ability of the machine to brake. Therefore, the bike should be cleaned regularly and the brake callipers should be stripped and cleaned more frequently during the winter. 3. If the machine is driven using chains, make sure that the chain has the appropriate amount of tension and lubrication. 4. Change the tyres to winter tyres. All manufacturers of tyres make tyres that are suitable to cold weather. These tyres consist of compounds that heat quicker when exposed to lower temperatures. Additionally, make sure that the tyres possess the optimum pressure. Remember that making changes to your bike might conflict with the terms of cover for many manufacturers. Make sure you tell your insurer. 5. Make sure that you are dressed appropriately. It is best to wear a windproof as well as waterproof layer so that you are properly insulated from the rain and cold. In addition, make sure that your jacket, trousers, gloves, and boots fit well and are comfortable to ride in for extended periods of time. 6. Numerous manufacturers sell electric garments that can be connected to the bike, allowing you to stay warm. These garments can be combined with windscreens, heated grips, knuckle guards, and bar muffs that will limit the effect of the wind. 7. Make sure that you wear a jack and vest that have high visibility and possess reflective patches. Additionally, make sure that you are wearing a clean visor and possess a chemical treatment or de-misting insert. Make sure that you have an extra visor which is darker in cause you have to drive through a lower sun. Ensure that the lights are clean as well and have no dirt blocking the fixtures. 8. Take courses during the summer months that will heighten your ability and skills when driving. Off-road riding courses are also an excellent choice.
