Bird Houses—five Tips On Placement

As many bird watchers know, setting up bird houses in your own environment is an excellent way to lure many interesting species of birds into your own environment, making bird watching a very cost effective recreation. Following are a few tips that should be kept in mind when planning to set up bird houses for this form of recreation.

• The ideal time to erect a bird house is in the late summer to early fall—early winter at latest. The reason for this timing is the fact that it falls well in advance of the breeding season. It gives the birds the opportunity to situate themselves well before the breeding season.

• In general, houses for the birds should be placed in sunny, open areas. But, most important to keep in mind is to remember that houses placed in trees are opened to the danger of predators such as cats and squirrels.

• The placement of bird houses depends, largely on the species of bird you are trying to attract. For instance, robins like to live on wooden ledges that have some width with roofs that protect them from the wind. Certain species of wrens, along with swallows and bluebirds prefer the open air in a grassy field or in a large backyard that does not have much vegetation. Nuthatches and woodpeckers, on the other hand, like living in houses placed on posts or in a tree situated in a wooded area.

• Free-standing PVC pipes or metal poles are excellent for mounting bird houses because they are difficult for predators to climb. Again, nailing houses to living trees should be avoided. Yet, the houses should be fastened in such a way as to prevent swaying as birds avoid houses that move.

• Placing aviary houses, at least, 5-30 feet above the ground is another way of keeping aviaries safe from the attack of predators. And, again, keeping these houses 25 feet away from each other addresses the issue of territorial fights among birds. By putting boxes on poles in pairs allows multiple species to co-exist.

These simple guidelines make it easy to attract multiple species of birds into one’s environment and the economical pleasure you will experience is beyond words. Happy bird watching.
