Black Friday History At Costco
Recent years have seen the savings giant opening a little later than most retailers, beginning their doorbuster sales at 9 a.m., but that’s probably best attributed to the fact that Costco pulls in a different crowd than that of Wal-Mart, Target, or any other competitor, focusing on its own niche demographics of members and casual buyers that may have seen must-have listings in passing. The store has also been notorious for pushing out sales throughout their holiday season, rather than unleashing everything they have to offer on Black Friday. The ad Costco put out in 2010, which had a little more than 30 total deals, featured HDTVs, DVDs, computers and more discounted even further than they already were, making it the clearance event of the year for the lucky (or unlucky, if you’ve seen the latest membership fees) members of Costco. The retail chain prominently advertised ADC 24-inch HDTVs for $149, HP Desktop PCs for $799, Olympus FE-370 8-megapixel Digital Cameras for $119, My Book Elite 1TB External Hard Drives for $84, Magellan RoadMate GPS systems listed at $30 off and Flip UltraHD Camcorders listed at $20 off. Costco is currently leading the charge on pushing holiday sales earlier and longer than ever, having received merchandise and begun their 2011 sales pitches as early as the end of September. And Circa 2008, Costco began extending their Black Friday sales through the weekend and spilling their deals over to the online world, even offering online-exclusive deals not to be found in a trip to their retail store. How Costco handles its online selections this year should be on every watchful shopper’s radar, regardless of whether you are a member. Costco continues to see their Black Friday ads leak earlier and earlier, meaning that Costco members can look forward to finding out what should be expected from Costco sooner rather than later.
