Blog Traffic: Developing Regular And Consistent Readers
If you want to have regular and consistent readers, not surprisingly you need to post regularly and consistently. I suggest people post at least weekly and ideally several times a week. If you post erratically, you'll have erratic readers at best.
People ask, "How often do I need to post?" The answer is of course "It depends." If you are posting on timely topics, for example, the latest breaking news in your field, you need to post fairly often because your posts lose their value pretty quickly soon as it's not news anymore. If you are posting on timeless topics, for example, sales techniques that never really change, you don't need to post as often.
Some people like to have a posting schedule. Some will have a Monday, Wednesday, Friday or perhaps at Tuesday, Thursday posting schedule. This means they will post on those days as a minimum and perhaps also post some additional days as well, depending on whether something pops-up they want to write on or they have time.
I suggest you don't write something just because it's a posting day. The mentality of "It's a posting day, I must post something" doesn't make a lot of sense. You really shouldn't post anything unless it's valuable; unless it's useful content that provides value to your readers. So what if you miss the very occasional posting day?
Personally, I just kind of wing it, and that's okay too. I do not use a posing schedule, as most people that read my blogs can tell. Some weeks I may post 10 or even 15 times, other weeks only a couple of times. Still, I at least get something new up on my blog weekly.
As your blog matures, and you develop an audience, often post frequency is not as important. If you have a hungry mass of readers ready to consume your content, you can post somewhat less frequently and regularly. Still you cannot be extremely erratic: if you post nothing for a month then daily for a week, don't be surprised if no one is around to read it!
