Boat Building Supplies: So, I Guess You're Going To Need Some Tools To Build That Boat!

I know what you're thinking! "I'm going to need all these tools if I ever plan to build this boat properly!" At first, I thought so too, but it's not true! In fact, it couldn't be further from the truth. It doesn't take a huge selection of tools, and the tools you need are readily available at your local hardware store and the like.

Obviously you'll need your basic hand tools such as a hammer, tri-square, chisels, saws, wrenches, clamps, a plane, level, etc... Chances are though; if you've ever built anything before like a dog house or some bookshelves you probably have most if not all of these tools already.

Sure, you're going to need some more specialized tools like a bevel measure, a rip saw, and a block plane, but you don't have to break the bank on these items either.

If you'll recall (in my article about building a boat shop/shelter) I suggested that you have a power source set up so you can make use of some power tools.

A portable circular saw is a popular tool and you can use it for almost any other project you undertake. You'll need a table saw; a regular sized one will do the trick. Band saws can be expensive, so a saber saw is a good replacement as it's much cheaper. And, of course an electric drill is needed to make holes and drive in screws. Again, very likely that you have some of these tools already.

The cost of some of these tools can be quite hefty, but here are a few suggestions:

1. Power tools tend to hold their value quite well, so if you do decide to buy them brand new keep in mind you can sell them and recover most of your money. Keep in mind though, that you might need them if you decide to take up any other building projects. You know best, though!

2. If you don't like the idea of having to buy new tools just for this project, then don't! You can very easily and readily find tools to rent and you can return them upon completion of your build.

3. You can buy your tools used. Simply go to local pawn shops or garage/yard sales. Typically, tools are a popular find at these places.
