Last few years have noted a shift in the kind of Bollywood films reaching the public with more meaningful films having unique themes, techniques and plots being made in place of the general 'masala' movies. This can be clearly noted in the currently playing and upcoming Bollywood movies.

The clear line dividing the alternative cinema from the commercial cinema is disappearing. The new Bollywood movies being released portray real problems and are well directed, edited and cinematographed. Good cinema directed by capable directors is having a great impact on the selection of the movies by the public in general.

A Lot Of upcoming Bollywood movies and films that were released recently like Wake Up Sid, Well Done Abba and Aamir are based on the lives of people who are more like characters we meet in daily life. The common citizen's fight against worldwide terrorism and social injustice has become a favourite theme amongst the modern directors.

One more visible trend is the use of the advanced technology and special effects in new movies such as Drona, Love Story-2050 and Krrish. Even animation movies are enjoying popularity and large producers like Yash Raj Films are investing money and energy in such movies.

Another change that has recently become well known is the remaking of old box office hits. For instance, RGV ki Aag was a remake of the old Amitabh movie Sholay and Don which is another Amitabh movie from 70s was remade with Shahrukh as the lead.

The trend of making movies that serves the urban viewers is also becoming popular. Such movies like Fashion, Metro, Company, Wake Up Sid and Page3 that were directed to the city viewers have turned out to be very profitable for the producers.

Another upcoming trend perceptible in Bollywood is that of a number of films being produced annually by select production houses. Also, co-production of films by several banners is becoming more popular in present times.

Finally, a very crucial trend in the Bollywood cinema has been its increasing popularity outside India and the increase in demand of the bigger Hindi movies. A huge number of the Indians who are now residing abroad still want to see Hindi movies and it is conjectured that soon Hindi movies will be competing with the Hollywood flicks in international markets.
