Bones Have Natural Cure For Diabetes
A new study reveals that the skeleton plays a great function in regulating deposits of fats and sugar levels in the body. This study which was conducted in Columbia University Medical Center raised hopes over a more natural treatment and prevention of diabetes. Not just for structural support Like fats who were once thought to be static, this present study proves that bones, like an endocrine gland, have also very active metabolic behaviors that include releasing hormones to renew itself and help the pancreas produce more insulin to regulate blood sugar and fat deposits. Relationships between bone and fat Studies tried to see the relationship between fats and bones, as the hormone leptin that the fats release plays a role in bone formation. As the body’s organs always have relationship with each other, the bones may also have relationship with the fats. One obvious observation is that fat people are somewhat protected from osteoporosis. Also, having a heavier body mass means that the bones have to adjust to the extra weight and have to be stronger to carry that extra weight. This shows that it is very logical to think that bones and fats have a way to communicate to each other to carry on this very important and crucial coordination. The research team in Columbia University conducted this experiment with mice and found out that mice who were engineered to overeat and those whose diet consists of fats produced more osteocalcin hormones in their bones. These hormones play a significant role in managing glucose in the body. This is done in three ways: first by helping the pancreas produce more insulin-producing cells; second, by helping these cells produce more insulin; and third, by helping the body become more sensitive to insulin. The experiment revealed that high level of the hormone osteocalcin in the body of those mice prevented diabetes. If what happened with the mice is also what is happening in the human body, the hope is very high in preventing and treating diabetes through normal processes. A further study is now being conducted to see if mice who are diabetic would be cured if their bodies are supplemented with osteocalcin. A hope of a natural cure Though experts are still in the process of conducting more experiment on this, but people can foresee a breakthrough in diabetes prevention and treatment. Some studies have already revealed that diabetic persons have low levels of osteocalcin in their bones, though experts still cannot see its link to diabetes.
