Bookkeeping - A Necessary Evil

The devil is in the details and when you are a contractor the only details you want to worry about is getting the job done and making the customer happy. And, that’s how it should be, but it’s not. Unfortunately, to keep your business on track you must have a good book keeping system in place to account for all that hard work. In the contractor business like in any business it’s a necessary evil and when it’s not done right a real mess can ensue. You have a lot of things to account for such as supplies, payroll, materials and tools. The list goes on and on. All that stuff has to be kept track of for your bank, the IRS, but most importantly for you.

Most people see book keeping as strictly important for other people ancillary to your business. For example, that means banks, other lenders, stock holders, payroll liabilities, and of course, the IRS. The most important reason for book keeping should be for anyone in the contractor business to keep track of what they are doing, how they are progressing and where to take their business in the future. Book keeping is basically an x-ray of your operations that can show where there are deficiencies and where you are healthy. Then you can make decisions on how best to steer your contractor business. Book keeping is not just for the other guys.

But, let’s talk about those other guys for a second. If you have a sloppy book keeping system the chances of getting any decent financing at good rates is pretty much blown. Banks and other lenders want to see a tight ship as far as financing goes. Right or wrong if you show some deficiencies in your book keeping those guys may leave you twisting in the wind. And, of course there are the state revenue services and the IRS. You definitely don’t want those guys on your back. They never go away and if you think book keeping is a pain and takes time from what you really want to be doing, just try dealing with them!

Yup, for the contractor and any other business person, bookkeeping is a fact of life and paying attention to it can really help your business flourish. It is a necessary evil in any contractor business unfortunately. So, get in the loop and figure out a good solid book keeping system today.

Hello, I'm currently a contractor based in New Hampshire. I'm just about to launch a membership site built by contractors for contractors. It's a place where likeminded contractors can come learn and share. www.contractorblab.com www.contractorblabblog.com
