Boost Home Security Before Your Summer Vacation

As the weather gets warmer and children all over the country feel the excitement of finishing the school year, people start preparing for their vacations. Hardworking individuals and families deserve time to relax and to enjoy the beautiful summer weather outdoors. Yet before you go anywhere on vacation, it makes sense to take a few moments to review your home security situation and plan for your absence.

Many people take longer vacations in the summer than in other seasons because of their family’s schedule or because they want to enjoy the wonderful warm weather. However, in order to be care-free during the trip, it is important to reduce the risks associated with leaving a house unattended for a prolonged period. Burglars frequently make it a point to stake out the area they plan to target, which means that they could realize your house is empty for multiple days or weeks. If you do not have a home alarm installed, such a situation is risky because it gives burglars plenty of time to get in and out without anyone realizing what has happened.

Risk can be reduced and your peace of mind increased with the addition of a home alarm system. Motion detectors work to establish an invisible shield around your house. If broken by a burglar trying to get in, the company responds by contacting the appropriate local authorities even if you cannot be reached on your trip. If anything does happen to your home and an intruder tries to break in, the local law enforcement officials will respond to the emergency. A fast response is essential in order to apprehend the criminal, preventing him from attacking any other houses in the area and causing damage to other families away on vacation.

Additional precautions to decrease your fire risk should also be taken prior to leaving town. Unplug most devices, such as televisions, computers, microwaves, and toasters. Appliances, even if turned off, still use energy in standby mode. Unplugging them reduces the chances a spark could jump to flammable material and start a fire. You should also verify that the smoke detectors are functioning as part of any complete home security system. While you and your family may be far away, the smoke detectors will keep working by sending information to your home security company. The professionals at the company, if they suspect a fire, will contact the local fire department to response immediately even if you are hundreds or thousands of miles away on vacation.

Finally, consider what steps you need to take related to the daily care of your house. If you have pets or plants, you should find a trusted neighbor or friend to stop by on a regular basis. Dogs in particular need extra attention, so be sure that the person you ask to check on your pet will be able to spend some time with them. Services, such as mail and newspaper delivery, should be suspended. Burglars know that if mail is piling up at a house, chances are that it is empty. A quick phone call or note for the mail carrier takes just a few minutes, and helps make your house safe so that you can fully enjoy your summer vacation.
