Boston Fine Art College

Looking for an art and design institution? Why not check out the Montserrat College of Art instead of the same-old Boston Fine Art College?

Located about 20 miles north of Boston in the seaside city of Beverly, Montserrat was founded by artists in the 1960s as the Montserrat School of Visual Arts. In the beginning, Montserrat offered only a diploma program in a number of studio concentrations: Graphic Design, Illustration, Interdisciplinary Arts, Painting/Drawing, Photography/Videography, Printmaking and Sculpture.

After its accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (nasad.arts-accredit.org) in the 1980s, it also began offering the Bachelor of Fine Arts program. A private residential institution, Montserrat still prides itself on being a small college that values the person inside the artist as much as it does the artist inside the person.

Montserrat is built around the needs of individuals. “We offer many programs throughout the year that enable you to demonstrate your individual talents and take risks in your learning and art-making that only an intimate, supportive community can provide,” says Brian Bicknell, Montserrat's Dean of Student Services.

Whether you want to become an artist, art teacher, increase your value in the eyes of your employer or simply satisfy your curiosity about art, you are guaranteed to find an appropriate area of study at Montserrat:

• Foundation Art Courses

Courses are structured to complement the creative abilities of students. Students also have the freedom to begin study of a specific discipline in their first or second semester. All activities and approaches are treated equally and none is emphasized.

• Art Education

Montserrat's Art Education Program is one of the most challenging programs of its kind in New England. Montserrat offers initial licensure at either the pre-kindergarten to grade 8 or grades 5 to 12 level. Courses comply with and exceed the Massachusetts Standards for Teacher Licensure and the Massachusetts Arts Curriculum Frameworks.

Here's what a Montserrat alumna had to say about the Art Education Program:
“My four years spent at Montserrat helped to prepare me for the Art classroom I am in today. I entered the Art Education Program knowing that I enjoyed Art and that I wanted to work with children. My Art classroom today is richer because of the experiences I had at Montserrat. [The professors] were a huge support system as I started in my own classroom and when I entered graduate school. Montserrat has a very strong Art Education Program that prepares students for anything that [they] may encounter after graduation.”—A. U. Brown, Art Teacher, Hemenway Elementary, Framingham, MA

• Liberal Arts

Liberal Arts study at Montserrat is synonymous with a unique curriculum. Students of the Bachelor of Fine Arts program are exposed to skills and several contexts and ideas that can come in handy in the world outside the campus and studio. Teachers and students alike discover new ways through which liberal and visual arts dovetail for the artist's benefit. Subjects covered include English composition, art history, humanities, science, social science and a number of electives.

• Senior Seminars

The Senior Seminar (required in all concentrations) is a distinguishing feature of the Montserrat Bachelor of Fine Arts program. The Seminars are Senior Fine Arts (a six-credit course), Graphic Design, and Senior Illustration. A formal application and the approval of the faculty evaluation panel concerned are required for admission into the Senior Seminars.

• Minors

Montserrat offers minors in Art History and Creative Writing. The former is ideal for those who wish to become art educators, curators, critics and administrators, and as a precursor to graduate programs in art history and education, design and studio art.

A recent addition, a minor in Creative Writing is ideal for those inclined towards publishing, screenwriting and graphic novels. This minor arms students with critical real-world editing skills.

Montserrat also offers students programs in time management, diversity and current issues.

Montserrat is also home to a student-run art gallery, the Bear Gallery, which provides students the invaluable experience of organizing and running a live gallery.

Student life includes trips to galleries in Boston and New York City, and opportunities to volunteer in the local community.

Resembling apartments, Montserrat residence halls feature living rooms, kitchens and shared or single bedrooms. Montserrat also offers an off-campus dining plan for its students.

Montserrat's campus culture rivals that of any Boston Fine Art College but is much more intimate and inclusive because of the small number of students enrolled here.
