Botox: What's It All About?

So, we've all heard of Botox. We've all heard, at least in passing, about how this or that celebrity recently had a treatment and the subsequent gossip about whether they look drab or fab. Many middle-aged or senior women would like to invest in a wrinkle-reducing treatment, but they don't have enough information to make a final decision.

That is why I want to break down this common procedure into the basics so that you can consider your options and make an educated choice.

But before I begin, I want to say that you should not be influenced by what others will think of you if you go through with getting Botox injections. Your health and beauty outcomes are up to you so that YOU can feel confident.

What is Botox? Well, the truth is that the neurotoxins found in clostridium botulinum--a type of potentially deadly food poisoning--have been turned into a substance used to temporarily paralyze the muscles in the face, which is what causes the wrinkles to vanish.

Sounds gross, right? No way! Science has turned several serious poisons to our benefit. If you think about it, it's actually really cool.

If you are concerned that the substance could be dangerous, you can lay your fears to rest. Cosmetic use of the botulinum toxin has been in practice for over 20 years! Plus, it has been used in several other treatment, including problems with muscle spasms and excessive perspiration.

If you are still feeling nervous, you can have a discussion with your doctor or the clinician who will be responsible for your Botox treatment during a consultation to have your specific worries addressed.

Compared to many cosmetic procedures, Botox is relatively noninvasive. Though it is administered via injections, they are done through a small needle inserted just below the skin's surface.

There is virtually no recovery time, but you can expect to experience soreness and/or pain, for which your doctor may prescribe a strong anti-inflammatory. The results you hope for may take up to four days to take effect, but they can last as long as four months!

There are some practitioners that offer a "lighter" treatment of Botox, NYC for one, which consists of fewer injections and an even more diluted formula so that the facial muscles are less paralyzed and more flexible. If you are looking for just a sample when you have never tried Botox before, you may want to discuss this as an option.

Remember--you need to do what's right for YOU. Ask yourself, "Is this going to boost my confidence and make me feel good about who I see in the mirror every day?"
