Breaking Through The Barriers: Positive Business Thinking
Over the years I have built my career on three books I was turned on to as a teenager by my grandmother, who essentially raised me and my eight brothers and sisters. The books were "As a Man Thinketh," by James Allen, "How To Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie and "The Power of Positive Thinking" by Norman Vincent Peale. These books still speak volumes of how to live our lives in a personally empowering and inspirational way.
The positive psychology movement is one of the most prevalent and powerful forces in business today. With our current economic situation an organization's success relies on the successful performance of employees, making it imperative for employees and teams have a greater sense of personal and professional empowerment.
Positive thinking and positive attitudes are essential in today's economic conditions with downsizing, "right sizing" and organizations doing more with less. Companies now need leaders who can motivate and encourage employees and teams to focus with a positive mental attitude.
The following are some traits of positive leaders:
Optimism - A belief and expectation of positive outcomes no matter the circumstances. Enthusiasm - High energy, passion and personal motivation; enthusiasm is contagious. Belief - Trusting in a higher being and universal laws that will provide support and hope. Integrity - With the unethical practices of CEOs at companies like WorldCom and Enron, we need honesty, openness and fairness in our business practices. Courage - Take risks even when the outcome is uncertain; no obstacles no miracles. Confidence - Being sure of oneself, having learned from mistakes and personally assured of decisions. Determination - Never, never quit Patience - Having the ability to sleep on a problem and wait on the opportunity to unfold. Calm - Under fire can stay focused and objective. Servanthood - Not asking anyone on the team to do something you would not do yourself. Genuinely care about your team. With work/life balance in the workforce disappearing it is important that employees keep a positive mental attitude in these turbulent times. These 10 traits will also help one with stress management and keeping a healthy work/life balance.
If you're the team leader or boss, consider taking the lead and become a positive influence on your employees. Relax the grip on your knowledge workers. When tasks allow create flex-time policies that enable employees to work more entrepreneurially. Make sure you have lots of positive recognition and, above all, create an environment of trust and fun. You will have a happier more productive workforce and you will be ahead of your competitors who are tightening the grip and still demanding an 8-5 model.
