Breast Augmentation - Know What To Expect

Of the millions of cosmetic procedures performed every year, breast augmentation continues to rank at the top of the list of most commonly asked for procedures. Making the decision to undergo breast surgery is an exciting time for most women, however, it is important that patients are thoroughly informed about the procedure so they know what to expect and can set realistic aesthetic goals. Women who are well-educated on the procedure prior to undergoing surgery are typically the most satisfied with their end results.

As with any surgery, there are risks and potential side-effects that can occur with breast augmentation including pain, swelling, inflammation, nipple oversensitivity, etc.. These side effects can be avoided or reduced if post-surgical care instructions given to you by your plastic surgeon are properly followed. These instructions may include monitoring your temperature, emptying drains or using cold compresses to ice the breasts. The degree to which a patient experiences these post-surgery side effects also depends on the experience and surgical expertise of your doctor. For this reason, it is important that patients do thorough research on plastic surgeons in their area and get referrals from friends, family and by browsing the internet to ensure they are getting the best surgical care available.

After surgery, most patients are required to wear a special support bra that is meant to reduce pain and swelling in the breasts after the procedure. Some patients will also need to wear an elastic band or strap around their chest in order to help the implants settle into the correct position. While these garments may be uncomfortable at first, it is important that you wear them and follow any other post-op instructions given to you by your doctor.

The breast augmentation procedure itself will vary depending on what you and your plastic surgeon decide upon in your personal consultation. One of the first decisions you will make will be which type of implant you want. Saline is typically the more popular implant, however it is said that saline implants are not as natural feeling as their counterpart silicone. Patients often shy away from silicone however due to health issues with them in the past, although today they are considered to be perfectly safe.

You will also have to decide on what size implant you want. The size of your new breasts will depend on your body frame to a certain degree. Overly large implants on someone with a smaller or petite body size would not only look overpowering and unnatural, but can also potentially cause back problems.

The best way to achieve optimal results is to do thorough research before your consultation so that you know the right questions to ask your doctor. Your knowledge and personal aesthetic goals combined with realistic suggestions from our surgeon will help you make a well-informed decision regarding your breast augmentation procedure.
