Broadband Security - Part 1 (learning About Security)

Now computers are an integral part of the way we live in the 21st century, our homes and offices often contain a personal computer, which is connected to the internet by an “always on” broadband connection. We are at a high risk than previously, as when on dial up connections, we used the internet for shorter periods.
With broadband the most common way in which we use the internet, it is extremely important that we have security in place, and also know the implications on the “online criminals” of broadband security.

Most of us sometimes wonder why anyone would be interested in the data on our computers.
There’s one simple answer to that, “Easy Targets”.

We use broadband internet for several reasons such as banking, booking Holidays, and buy products and services online. Whilst we enjoy these services, we must be aware that we store personal information, such as bank account security details, on computers, where a criminal with access to personal information can successfully impersonate their victims, and use there details fraudulently. With so much now being used on broadband internet on our computers, criminals see it as a new target. Computer fraud is attractive as it can be relatively simple if you don’t have security, and is inexpensive for them, also criminals can do this from anywhere in the world, and aim to remain anonymous.

This article is not intended to frighten or to stop you using broadband internet services, it is for your attention to be noted that online fraud is increasing year on year. Whilst no computer system can ever be considered to be totally secure, with the right tools and security in place, a user can protect themselves against the threats of “online criminals”.

Broadband security is fundamental to anyone who uses the internet, to ensure there personal information and computer is safe. Your broadband provider occasionally offer protection from spam and can block certain IP addresses, but they cannot shield you completely from computer intrusion. The responsibility of your security is in your hands, no-one on the internet can take care of that for you.
