Step#1 - Focus Less on the Bench Press

Now the bench press is important however a recent study has actually shown that the bench press is indeed not the best chest exercise if you are looking to build chest muscles.

So what exercise was shown to promote the most growth in your chest?

In a recent study, researchers found that the chest flyes actually worked out a larger percentage of the chest muscles than its bench pressing counter part. The study proved that with a properly executed pec flye the chest muscles were being hit harder than with the bench press, as with the bench press you are using your front delts, triceps and lats to help push the weight.

In order to build chest muscles at a consistent rate you will need to avoid hitting the dreaded muscle building "plateau". The absolute best way to do this is to incorporate the "Progressive Overload" method into your chest workouts.

The progresive overload method is based on the workload that your muscles have to do. If done correctly your muscles will be constantly seeing an increase in intensity and therefore it will constantly force your muscles to adapt to the new stress levels.
