Building Courage

Most people think having courage is about what you show in battle. This may be so but having courage is not just this it is having the courage to do things, things that you may fear to do or what you are afraid of.

What are you afraid of? And when do you need courage the most? Wouldn’t it be great if you could build courage and replace that fear with an epic courage that allowed you to overcome every bogeyman and replace it with a potential opportunity? Courage is what empowers us to do this.

Fear kills the mind. Let me illustrate a situation.

You have seen that girl or boy that you would like to ask out on a date. You are fearful in approaching them that you will be rejected. So what do you do? You don’t and you never get to go out with who could have been your future partner.

You’re not really “afraid” in the normal sense. Rather, your courage has become entangled with the complex system within our society and your fear has translated over to social discomfort and how you will feel about yourself in the unlikely event that you are rejected.

Past experiences influence our courage and profoundly affect how we fear to do certain things. No one is born brave just as no one is born cowardly. Experiences make us afraid to the same things in the future.

Sometimes the fear is not for ourselves, it may be the fear of hurting someone if you told them unpleasant information. This fear is a rational fear and normal especially if it is necessary to tell someone something for their own good.

Mark Twain once said, “Courage is not the lack of fear. It is acting in spite of it.” And this quote essentially summarizes exactly what we should be doing. Fear cannot be eliminated entirely, and if it were we would lose a very valuable asset. But courage is our ability to master this fear and act past it in order to live a more fulfilled and free life.

To tell the difference between courage and a simple lack of fear, we must first understand that fear is the overcoming of an obstacle that stands in our way. There are ways to overcome these obstacles but how?

There are certain entrainments that you can do that helps you to build courage. Relaxing and listening to calming music before you face the moment you fear is a prime source. But first a more deeper understanding of what fear is all about is required.
