If your home is to be built on a narrow block there are some things that should be taken into consideration to ensure satisfaction with the home and harmony with the neighbours. Firstly you should check the regulations for your state to determine whether the home can go right to the boundary, or if it must be set back 1 or 1 1/2 metres.
Choose a design that gives maximum privacy from the neighbours. You don't want them to be looking straight into your living areas, nor do you want your main windows to be looking right at them. Consider using a design with a central courtyard so that you have better privacy and a sense of space.
Use a light well to increase natural lighting in your home. Positioned in the middle of the house it will let in light that would otherwise need to be provided via electricity. An open plan design will give a sense of space too. This means that your kitchen will open onto the dining and living area. In a narrow block, houses can easily throw shadows over the adjoining property. While it may be necessary to build up rather than out, try and choose a design that has minimal interference with the neighbours' homes.
