Building Online Business Traffic
Whatever business goals you have in mind, increasing qualified visitor traffic must come first. Marketing any product or service online is like traditional sales in many ways. It's a numbers game. You need to draw an audience large enough to make a profit. In 2004, my partner Evan and I created a surprising success marketing and selling our first eBook, How to Start a Cleaning Business. He knew from studying successful internet businesses that our efforts would begin to pay off sooner if we started right away increasing traffic to our website. He was confident that our product would begin to sell itself if we could only get it in front of the right people. However, we were new to the business of making money online. The Web seemed incoherently big. The thought of marketing our eBook online felt like walking into a massive crowd going every which way, and searching in vain for someone to buy our information. We needed a system for finding our audience. Evan was positive we could sell enough eBooks to start covering all our expenses within months. I was skeptical. "I don't know anyone who is making money online," I told him. It seemed like a long shot. It also seemed like a dream that probably wouldn't come true. Looking back, I realize I was afraid to try. Trying might lead to failure, and then what? But he was convinced we could do it. "Let me prove it to you," he countered. All we had to do, he said, was invest our time and effort into building traffic online. At the time, I was prepared to continue cleaning houses. Our small company was making a profit, and for the meantime, cleaning was a good way to earn a living. I felt positive that someday I'd be teaching again, or writing for a living, but something urged me to give Evan's plan to start building traffic a try. So what if we failed to make it work? That negative view had a positive flipside: What if we succeeded? I decided to go for it. I had nothing to lose except a few weeks' worth of free time in the evenings. I started working on the eBook every night after work. As I sat writing, Evan got our website up and running, start-cleaning-business.com. He also got busy putting his theory to the test, regarding building online business traffic. The process of writing an eBook made me realize that indeed, we had learned a lot of useful information that could serve other people. By building enough qualified traffic flowing to our website, we increased the odds in the numbers game. Money from the eBook started to add up quickly, faster than I ever dreamed. Nine months after launching our website and putting the eBook up for sale, we earned enough money from our online business to pay the rent. Over the years, we wrote three more eBooks on related topics. We expanded the resources that we included in the eBooks, and reformatted them into the Suze & Ev Method. Eventually it made more sense to turn start-cleaning-business.com into a membership site. I know from experience that building online business traffic is the best use of your time and energy while starting an internet business.
