Burn More Fat While You Exercise
The research is significant, because when trying to lose weight both the amount of fat burned and the amount of calories matter. Because athletes can exercise harder than untrained people (i.e. run faster or pedal harder) and hence burn more calories in the same amount of time, the researchers wanted to know if it was fat they were burning or carbohydrate. In the study the researchers took ten cyclists and had them exercise at 70% - 80% of their maximum for one hour, the hardest that a trained athlete can do for one hour. Some of the athletes were burning as much as three to four times as many calories as untrained people during exercise. When the researchers calculated the amount of fat burned it too was elevated over untrained people by as much as 50%. The researchers attributed the changes to adaptations in the muscle that accumulate over time from training regularly that allow them to exercise harder. The good news, the researchers say, is that other work in their lab show that anyone at any age can accumulate these same adaptations the person just needs to start a regular exercise program.
