Designing for the web involves multitude skilled disciplines from layout to type & colour. Colour is especially significant as it provides the user's first impression. the right colours can create a good user experience, whilst inappropriate colours can have a bad impact.

To build a good site, the web designer needs to know how colours affect people. people often subconsciously react to colours & associate them with different emotions & feelings.

Every colour imaginable can be used on the internet now, so picking the right colours can be a mammoth task. here is a prompt summary of how some colours can evoke certain reactions.

Yellow can be associated with danger, hope, friendliness and riches. used in moderation, it can be used to highlight sections of a web page.

Green is a great colour to use to create a relaxed and calm website, it is associated with nature, jealousy, wealth and the organic.

Blue is linked to corporate, strength, water and harmony and the lighter blues can be used in website design to create a cool effect.

The colour black can be associated with death, mourning, power & style. many metal bands use black as their main colour due to its links with death & evil.

Yellow summons up visions of summer, joy & optimism. it's a colour that could be overwhelming & if used in conjunction with black, it creates a warning feel.

Like yellow, red is associated with love, sex & energy. it can be overpowering if over used, although it's excellent to attract attention.

Purple has associations with royalty, indulgence & luxury. it's not an often used colour in designing for the internet, probably because it is known as a girly colour.

Colour's role is not just to make a site look good, it can encourage feelings & emotions from the web surfing. selecting colours that anger the end user can have detrimental effects on your web site, whereas cleverly selecting could mean that the web site meets the user's expectations.
