Buying The Right Beginner Road Bike Can Be A Challenge

Buying a beginner road bike can certainly be a challenge if you are just getting started cycling. Most often this means you don't know what to look for when it come to brands or design or the parts. If you find yourself in this position then you need some good tips on what to look for in a bike that will give you several years of use without a lot of repairs or needing to upgrade.

Some people want you to focus first on the brand you should buy. Now I’m not saying brand isn’t important but there a quite a number of well known name brand bikes that sell good quality bikes. Each one of them sells their own entry level or beginner road bike. What really helps people get in the right ball park is an understanding what a beginner road bike is in their mind.

Some of the answer to that question is price and another is quality. One person will think of a beginner bike as something that cost a couple hundred bucks. Another is thinking I want the least expensive quality name brand bike. So what is the difference? Well you can go to the department store and buy a road bike for around three hundred dollars. It is a beginner bike but will be quite heavy and not have very good gearing and brake parts called the components but it will probably do for going around the block or to the corner store.

If you go to a bike shop (depending on the shop) you will have a choice of bikes made by Specialized, Trek, Giant, Felt and the list goes on. They each will have their entry level road bike but it will cost $800 to $1000 dollars. They are quality beginner road bikes. This is because the frame that is used will be reasonable light made out of aluminum probably with carbon fiber forks. The components will probably be made by Shimano and could be Sora or better. These components aren’t bad and will give you years of use.

Now your choice will somewhat need to depend on what your goals for biking are. As I said earlier if you are just going around the block you certainly would notice the difference between the bikes if you rode them but the difference to your quality of ride won’t be that significant. But if you are wanting a bike that will allow you to travel further distances or ride with a group or allow you to go in some charity rides then I would not recommend the department store specials.

To be honest I don’t recommend them at all but I understand that money is an issue for many of us and so we can’t always buy what we want and have to make a choice for what we can afford. I just want you to know that a name brand bike is definitely worth the money and I assure you that you will never regret making that your choice over the department store bike.

So when it comes to a beginner road bike I recommend buying the best bike you can afford and in my opinion the quality of the bike is more important than the brand.
