Buying A Safe - What To Consider

Buying a safe is a must, and is a wise investment. Small items are easy for thieves to carry off and re-sell. Experienced burglars know where to look for these things too, so your favorite hiding place might not be as secure as you think. You might consider a bank safe deposit box, but these are so inconvenient. One of the many selections of home safes would be so much easier. They can be hidden in the wall, or bolted down in a closet.

Before you buy a safe, make sure you understand the different levels of protection. UL (Underwriters Laboratories) Ratings, should be considered when buying a fire safe, and the categories are as follows.

Class C Safe -- Protects paper documents for up to 1 hour at temperatures up to 1700°F
Class B Safe -- Protects paper documents for up to 2 hours at temperatures up to 1850°F
Class A Safe -- Protects paper documents for up to 4 hours at 2000°F.

Under most circumstances, a class B or C safe is fine for protecting irreplaceable papers. There are specialized safes available to protect data storage devices and computer disks.

If you are considering a wall safe, know that the standard space between the studs has already been considered in the making of the safe. They are easy to install and few tools are needed. You won't likely have to run out and buy something. Even if you are a small senior citizen without a lot of muscle strength, you can install a wall safe yourself. The safes come with detailed instructions.

For a home safe, you might consider the usual small safes, or even the ones called hotel safes. These are a convenient and small size, and may be just right for your needs. They bolt down just as the others do, and with some companies, this can be done for you. Be sure to consider everything you might want to put in your safe prior to purchasing one. Consider the following: birth certificate, social security card, insurance policies and financial papers, a gun or two, jewelry, cash, jewelry. Think this through before making your purchase.

If you own several guns, be sure to consider a gun safe. There are many sizes, with and without horizontal shelves. Keep yourself and your family safe in case of a break-in, and don't let those valuable items be taken from you.
Combination lock, or electronic lock is up to you. Codes can be changed quickly and easily. Some safes come with one type of lock on the outside, and a keyed entry compartment on the inside, such as a depository safe.
When you browse the safe website, look at the various types, even if at first glance you think you want a particular type. This browsing can be very educational. And you can often ask questions by contacting the email listed on the site.
