Finding the right training course to match commercial requirements is very important in our turbulent times. But it's also just as relevant to find one that you can cope with, that is pitched at the right level for you personally. Top of the range study programs now offer easy-to-use DVD or CD ROM's. Through instructor-led video classes you'll find things easier to remember via the demonstrations and explanations. Then it's time to test your knowledge by interacting with the software and practicing yourself. Every company that you look at must be pushed to demo some examples of the type of training materials they provide. You're looking for evidence of tutorial videos and demonstrations and a wide selection of interactive elements.

Avoid training that is purely online. Physical CD or DVD ROM materials are preferable where possible, so that you have access at all times - and not be totally reliant on your broadband being 'up' 100 percent of the time.

A service that many training companies provide is job placement assistance. This is to steer you into your first IT role. With the great need for more IT skills in the UK today, there isn't a great need to get too caught up in this feature though. It really won't be that difficult to get a job once you're properly qualified.

Update your CV at the beginning of your training though (advice can be sought on this via your provider). Don't procrastinate and leave it until you've qualified. A good number of junior support jobs have been bagged by students who are in the process of training and have still to get qualified. At the very least this will get you on your way. Actually, an independent and specialised local recruitment consultant or service - who make their money when they've found you a job - will perform better than any centralised training company's service. Also of course they should know the area and local employers better.

A slight aggravation for many training course providers is how hard trainees are prepared to study to get qualified, but how un-prepared they are to work on getting the role they're qualified for. Don't falter at the last fence.

Full support is of the utmost importance - look for a package that provides 24x7 direct access, as anything less will not satisfy and will also hold up your pace and restrict your intake. Try and find training with proper support available at any time of the day or night (no matter if it's in the middle of the night on a weekend!) You'll need direct-access to qualified mentors and tutors, and not a call-centre that will take messages so you're constantly waiting for a call-back when it's convenient for them.

The best trainers incorporate three or four individual support centres active in different time-zones. Online access provides the interactive interface to seamlessly link them all together, at any time you choose, help is just a click away, avoiding all the delays and problems. Don't ever make the mistake of taking second best when you're looking for the right support service. Most would-be IT professionals who can't get going properly, are in that situation because of support (or the lack of).

An important area that is sometimes not even considered by people weighing up a particular programme is the issue of 'training segmentation'. This basically means the breakdown of the materials for drop-shipping to you, which completely controls how you end up. Many companies enrol you into a program typically taking 1-3 years, and deliver each piece one-by-one as you pass each exam. If you think this sound logical, then consider this: Students often discover that the trainer's usual training route isn't the easiest way for them. Sometimes, a different order of study is more expedient. And what if you don't get to the end at the pace they expect?

To be straight, the best option is to obtain their recommendation on the best possible order of study, but get everything up-front. Everything is then in your possession if you don't manage to finish at their required pace.
