“can I Cry Or Should I Be Brave?”

This was asked by an eight year old girl when her father was in coma and her mother was an emotional mess. On hearing this, the little girl's older sister couldn't hold back any longer and they wept together in each other's arms.

crying babyOften in our lives we come across situations where even though we wish to cry we don’t. It usually backs up to our childhood when we have been taught when and when not to cry or perhaps to not cry at all!

Haven’t we all heard statements like “Stop crying like a baby!” or “Why are you crying, are you a girl?” or “Be strong, don’t cry.”

Crying isn’t just for babies, for the timid or just for the ‘weaker’ sex. People are usually too embarrassed to demonstrate that some situation makes them cry. They probably find it ‘inappropriate’ to cry. So they try to hide their tears.

But that’s where the mistake is made. Crying is not “wrong” or only for women as wide misconceptions go. Crying is a natural process that releases the pressure from the mind and body. Bottling up tears that act as natural stress busters will only harm the body.

Crying is a physiological reflex to pain, disappointment, grief or when someone is “touched”. Any emotion that is too strong for the body to handle results in woman cryingtears. Some people also cry when frustrated or angry. It simply rids the body and mind of the strain.

The physiology behind it

There are tears always present in our eyes that keep the eyes clean and moist.

But emotional tears or psychic tears are produced when the body reacts emotionally to something.

When people get emotionally distressed or when the brain is in shock, our tear glands get activated. It is a nervous reflex between the tear glands and the emotional centers in our brains. Hence, whenever we are emotionally distressed, the tear glands will produce tears, and we cry.

Tears aren't just salt water

Most of us feel relieved or saner once we have shed those tears. Many people have also found that crying actually calms them after being upset and this is in part due to the chemicals and hormones that are released in the tears.

Scientists have discovered that the emotional tears contain higher levels of manganese and the hormone prolactin, and crying reduces these in the body; thus helping to keep depression away. William Frey II, a biochemist at the St Paul-Ramsey Medical Center in Minneapolis, found that emotional tears have 24 per cent more protein than reflex tears. They also contain leucine enkephalin, an endorphin that modulates pain, and hormones such as prolactin and adrenocorticotropic hormone, released at times of stress. Tears are the body's way of flushing out excess stress hormones.guy crying

Not a sign of weakness

Crying is not a sign of weakness. Here are several benefits of crying:

* Catharsis – According to philosopher Aristotle, crying purifies the mind and body by alleviating emotional stress. It is a healing process.
* Natural detox – By crying we release emotional tensions and rid the body of toxins and chemicals. Akin to meditation, crying restores the body to balanced state.
* Boosts positive physiological functions– Crying boosts a whole lot of physiological functions and processes like easing tension on our facial muscles. When we cry we release muscular tension by way of our expressions like frowning, tightening of lips, etc. This in turn leads to a reflex state of reduced muscle tension, easing the stressful situation.
* “Let go” – The biggest attribute of crying is that it is curative. It helps us let go of whatever it was that caused the misery to a great degree. It restores our body and mind to a natural balance that in turn helps us think better and straighter.

Many believe that the body, in times of emotional stress, actually depends on tear glands to release excess amounts of chemicals and hormones, bringing the body to a more stable state. So if you stop yourself from crying or prevent those tears from flowing due to some ‘macho’ or ‘weakness’ misconception, you will only harm your body and your stress will then regress in some other form.

Both physiologically and psychologically you need those tears to de-stress and calm you down.

How to help self

When in a situation that stresses you and you feel the need to release those tears please do so. But we often find ourselves in places where we cannot openly cry especially if the setting is a formal one. In such situations excuse yourself to the washroom and cry it out. Once you are sure you’re come out feeling better!

Most of us replay situations in our minds, thereby repeatedly weeping over the same issue. In such cases one needs to distract oneself or do something about the reason for the tears. Try and deal with it. Look at the positive things of the situation and move on. Simply crying over the same issue over and over again will only further stress.

You may be the kind of person that cannot cry. Not all situations may move us. But sometimes it is necessary to cry, to relieve self of the stress. In such situations watch a movie, drama or read a book that has moved you in the past. Anything that can release those toxins.

Crying also helps in managing anger and depression, which can prevent us from doing something stupid and impulsive under the control of such emotions. Crying releases the excessive chemicals, restoring balance in our body and calming the mind so that we happy girlcan think straight.
