Can You Learn To Play Guitar On Your Own?

Guitars play a very important role in our music culture. There are two large categories for the stringed instrument: acoustic and electric. Different incarnations of the acoustic guitar have been present in the musical history since the 12th century, although even older graphic representations existed in the ancient cultures of the world, such as the Hittite one. The electric guitar was invented in 1931 as a response to the growing necessity for amplified sound. Because the sound generated by the electric version is weak, it needs to be amplified before reaching the speaker stage. Different effects such as reverb of distortion can be added to the signal path to modify how the instrument sounds.

The electric guitar played a crucial role in the history of rock and roll, serving as a symbol for the style. Iconic musicians like Jimi Hendrix, who is widely appreciated as the greatest electric guitarist ever, did not enjoy the benefits of a classical musical education, managing to learn the instrument by themselves through long daily practice sessions, listening to records and attempting to reconstruct the songs by ear. Although learning to play the guitar might not prove to be excessively difficult, mastering the instrument is considerably harder and requires dedication and consistency.

So how do we start? Before anything else, you will need a guitar – acoustic or electric. Opinions are divided here and each choice presents different advantages and disadvantages to a beginner. Electric guitars used to be prohibitively expensive and it was financially easier to start with an acoustic instrument. Things have changed much in this respect and if you are certain that you want to learn to play electric guitar, then you should buy the best setup your money can afford, or you might find yourself in need of an early upgrade when your skills and expectations grow after the first few months. Fender guitars should also be considered.

Learning the first steps is always easier if you can afford an instructor. But do not let it discourage you if this is not a possibility. There are many good books out there that can help you. Full online classes are also available from a few websites, together with video guides, streamed or bought on DVD. Learning musical theory basics first will help you, so do not skip on chords, how to read tabs and understanding musical notation. You will also need to make sure that your new instrument is properly tuned.

As you can see, it’s not that hard to start learning guitar. Fulfill your dreams today and become a guitar hero just like your favorite musicians!
