Can You Really Read Between The Lines?
And what does this have to do with reading between the lines? Well, in fact, it's not what you think is going on, not what people actually say to you that counts or matters: it's the way that you 'feel.' So, in a sense, reading between the lines in life is seeing through the words and actions of others and deciphering how they are feeling. Because when you can see how a person is feeling, you can regard them in a whole new light. It certainly makes an angry person far less hurtful and their words less personal. Reading between the lines means realizing that when you are in the midst of feeling anger that it really isn't the thing that you think you are angry at that is important- it's just the anger itself that inflames you. I don't proscribe any antidote to negative emotions such as anger. I don't advocate meditation or cognitive therapy. Deep breathing may or may not help, depending on the strength of your mental obsession. Ultimately, it's your heart that counts, not your mind. What it comes down to simply is that we do not suffer because we are angry at injustice. We suffer because we are angry. Injustice is not the enemy- anger is. Negative emotions are no fun. That is not to say that I am for injustice, or think that it does not matter. What rational person would be? I am mortified at the suffering in this world and feel passionately that it should be alleviated. But that requires action, and emotions like anger rarely produce good actions. So I try to look at what's important, and remove whatever is blocking me from changing it.
