Can A Wii Keep You Fit?

The Wii is increasingly seen as being a useful tool in getting children to take part in some form of exercise. The interactive games consoles are being purchased not only be schools, but nursing homes and rehabilitation centres for burns, injury and stroke victims. The fact that it is a fun way to test your skills in games of golf, tennis and other sports is an important consideration. Motivation is a big factor in getting people to take their exercise and something that can be considered fun is a great motivator.

While the Wii seems to have a role to play in helping retrain the coordination of injury and stroke victims, experts are not quite sure whether it can actually reduce the weight of obese children. Studies have shown that half an hour of play uses up about 60 calories; half a piece of toast. Of course, enthusiastic players will want to keep playing for much longer than half an hour.

Some players have found that they have developed intense shoulder pain specific to Wii play. To prevent injuries it is now considered sensible to do warm up and warm down exercises before and after play. Concerned physiotherapists tell us that clenching and unclenching the fists ten times and rolling the shoulders are two exercises that will help prevent injury.
