Candy Origin
Candies didn't start out how we picture them now-in fact, the chocolate bar didn't come about until the 1850's and even then, it was a little different. Candies during the olden times were made of fruits and nuts dipped in honey or molasses. And during the early days, only rich people were able to buy candies because they were so expensive. Nowadays, it is great to think that we don't really have to amass fortunes just to buy candies, and we can even buy them at wholesale prices! Always remember this when you eat candies! Back in the days, it would be unfathomable to see so much candies all in one place! Candies Evolved We already mentioned the candy bar in its almost current form above. Of course, some were pioneers of change and others immediately followed suit. Take the M&M's for example. Named for the two owners of the Mars Company, and made so that they wouldn't melt in your hands while you were sitting out during a hot summer day. Also these chocolates were made with regards to the military! (After all...war in the tropics is a lot less like war in cold weather!) In fact, only the military were able to eat these treats during the World War II. Still Here! There are a few favorite candies that are still around. Chocolate is an example of a candy that will probably be around for good (which wasn't really sweet when it was first discovered. How it ended up being made into candy when it started as a spicy thick drink is a mystery!), and the candy corn. There are lots of other bulk candies that you can buy that have their origins in much older, simpler times! And who would have thought it?
