If you have been spending or have spent time with a sheltie, you definitely know what it is like to groom a small dog that is always mistaken as miniature collie. Just like other breeds with double coat, shelties have topcoat or outer coat which is often long, straight and harsh. The outer coat is essential for it protects a sheltie from cold and the elements. The undercoat, on the other hand, is short, furry and dense beneficial on keeping the dog warm. To remove and prevent tangles and mats, the coat should be brushed regularly, everyday if possible. It would be a great idea to have pin brushes, slicker brushes, natural bristle brushes and metal combs to aid you in brushing and combing your dog's double coat. Using metal comb and misting with water helps with tangles. Bathing should be done every three to four months.
This breed sheds two times a year, usually during spring and fall. It is during those times that owners need to become extra diligent in grooming their pets. Daily brushing using undercoat rake helps in getting rid of dead and loose hair. In addition to shedding during spring and fall, female shelties also shed right before or after giving birth.
The owner should not focus solely on caring for the coat alone. Be aware that the breed has genetic tendency toward eye issues such as Collie eye anomaly (CEA) and progressive retinal atrophy. Proper care and monthly home examination are great ways to determine early signs if there is something unusual with the eyes.
The slightly bent ears of a sheltie contribute to the proper sheltie expression. But despite that attribute, caring for the ears of a sheltie is not different from caring for the ears of other dog breeds. The inner ear should be clean and pink and must be free from odor or discharge. Frequent ear shaking or scratching may signify ear infections so watch out for it. If you suspect any ear problem, seek out your vet's advice immediately.
Regular cleaning of the nose, teeth and gums is also recommended. Vaccination and rabies shots should be updated as well measures to prevent flea and heartworm.
Providing your pet the best care you can give will not only make him live for 10 to 15 years but will also give you happiness, companionship and loyalty.
