Caring For Your Dental Implants

Now that you are the proud owner of your dental implants, you show off your new smile to everyone. These artificial teeth can do everything your real teeth can, but they are more resilient to the naturally occurring bacteria in your mouth and acidic foods that you eat. Now, just because the teeth are much more durable, that does not mean that you do not have to take care of them. Learning how to properly care for your new teeth will make them last and keep them looking new.

Like natural teeth, dental implants need to be brushed on a regular basis. It's recommended that you brush your natural teeth that least twice a day and the same goes for your new teeth. Brushing your artificial teeth at least twice a day will help to keep them clean and free from the bacteria that can cause damage to your new teeth. In fact, you may want to start brushing after each meal you eat to be on the safe side. The type of toothbrush you use should be able to extend all the way to the back of your synthetic teeth and you should always make sure you clean the abutements. To avoid irritating your gums, you can use a soft piece of cotton cloth or gauze to clean the rest of your gums and abutements.

Flossing is still very important. Just because you have dental implants, it does not mean that you should give up flossing. Just like regular teeth, food particles can get trapped in between the artificial teeth. Flossing will dislodge and remove anything that gets stuck between your teeth and help keep your mouth free from odors, decay, and damage.

Schedule regular dental appointments and see your dentist at least twice a year. At each of these visits, your dentist will check your dental implants to make sure that they still fit you properly. If there are any adjustments that need to be made, they will be made at that time. Your dentist will also check the health of your gums and jaws make sure that everything looks good.

Keeping your dental implants in good condition starts with you doing your part. Being diligent when it comes to brushing and flossing, in addition to making and keeping regularly scheduled appointments with your dentist are all necessary to make your teeth last as long as possible. Keep in mind that prosthetic teeth do not last forever and at some point they will start to show signs of natural wear and tear; however, by keeping them properly maintained, this wear and tear will not be something that causes you any grief anytime soon. As long as you see your dentist at regularly scheduled intervals, your teeth can be fixed and kept looking like new.
