Carpet Choosing – Fibers And Styles

If you are building a new home or just doing some remodeling to your present home, it is exciting for most people when it comes time to decide on a new carpet. Flipping through carpet samples books, asking other people's opinions on color and style, and doing research on the web, are all part of the process people usually follow when making this important decision. Your carpet should be a reflection of your personal taste, of course, and should harmonize with the decor of your home, but there are several important points that should be considered when choosing your carpet.

One of the first decisions to be made is in choosing which fiber of carpet is right for your home. One popular choice is polyester. Many people who are concerned about the earth's environment, choose PET, which is a polyester fiber made from plastic bottles that have been recycled. Another choice of fiber for carpet is nylon. Nylon is known for durability and strength, and it will usually cost more than carpet made from polyester fiber. Stain protection must be added to nylon carpets. Another very good choice of a carpet fiber is tufted or woven wool. This can be very expensive, but makes a carpet of good quality that will last for years. The least expensive type of carpet fiber is olefin, also known as polypropylene. It is a weaker fiber that tends to mat down, but it can often be cleaned more easily than other fibers.

Once you have decided upon a fiber, the question of style presents itself. There are a great many styles of carpet available on the market today. Carpets that are textured, twisted, looped, patterned and friezed – and these are only a few examples of styles of carpet. The shag carpets of the sixties and seventies are starting to become popular again. Saxony, which is a cut pile carpet with a refined surface is an elegant choice.
When choosing a style of carpet, you should remember that just because the fiber is longer and thicker, that does not necessarily mean that the carpet will be more durable. You should look for dense construction in your carpet.

When you have made the choices and decided on the right carpet for your home, choose a reputable installer so that your carpet will be installed properly to look good and last for a very long time. Then you can sit back and enjoy the compliments your new carpet will bring.
