Passengers do not need to head away on formal cruises; casual cruises provide an alternative, while luxury cruises can offer a quite different way to escape some of the dress code and scheduling requirements of many ocean-going getaways.
However, the type of cruise that will suit an individual best really depends on the experience that they are hoping to enjoy while on the waves.
Formal cruises
Most voyages are likely to be relatively formal cruises. These include fairly strict dress codes and set mealtimes.
For men, a smart black suit may be sufficient - but a tuxedo is probably a preferential option to avoid appearing underdressed.
Women should pack an elegant ball gown for evening meals.
However, in return for these efforts, passengers can expect table service to a typically high standard.
The accompaniment of live music - such as a pianist playing in the restaurant - is also a regular feature of formal cruises.
Meals themselves are a lavish affair, often comprising five courses and, on some voyages, prepared by a top chef from the world of fine cuisine.
Luxury cruises
For all of the opulence of formal cruises, but a little more freedom, luxury cruises are one alternative.
On these, passengers are not told when to eat; they decide for themselves when they are hungry.
A selection of restaurants are available to visit for some fine dining at any time of the day.
Meanwhile, for a little more privacy, holidaymakers can have their meals served directly to their cabin.
First class facilities can also be found on board, such as gym equipment and swimming pools.
A few laps of the pool could be just the thing to help burn off any excess calories - and make room to enjoy some more of the fine food.
Casual cruises
Of course, there are casual cruises that escape some of the fussiness of their more formal counterparts.
With these, meals can be attended in smart attire, but without the need for black tie outfits.
There may also be flexibility over when to eat - to the extent that some casual cruises can provide a buffet instead of multiple courses delivered via table service.
