This posh Londoner’s delivery and observational style may divide opinion, but there’s no denying he’s a master joke-teller, deserving of the huge success he’s enjoyed in recent years. Easily the most accomplished and confident comic of his generation, you’ll laugh even if you don’t expect to.

John Bishop Live
The likeable Liverpudlian plays it pretty safe during his live shows, but his tales of family life should strike a chord with most of us. Inevitably for a man in his 40s, many of his stories revolve around his children – and the exasperation of increasingly losing touch with their lives.

Don’t watch while grandma’s around…
Frankie Boyle: If I Could Reach Out Through Your TV and Strangle You I Would
No celebrity news, disability or religion is safe when the sweary Scot takes to the stage. For these reasons, Boyle is not to everyone’s taste – but if you’re still in touch with your inner teenager, this could provide a couple of hours of guilty pleasure. Much like McIntyre, you won’t want to laugh – in fact you’ll actively try to stop yourself – but laugh you will.

Lee Mack: Not Going Out
A comic well-versed in the tradition of corny one-liners and fast-paced humour, this former Pontin’s Blue Coat is a good old-fashioned entertainer. What Mack lacks in edgy material and originality, he more than makes up for his sardonic northern delivery and general likeability.

One for a good old knees up…
Tim Minchin: Ready For This
Mixing comedy and music is a tough skill to master – but this Aussie comic pulls it off with aplomb. Covering topics as diverse as boobs and rationalism, you’ll be impressed as much by his piano playing as his clever one-liners.
