Ceramic Tiles – How To Grout Between Your Ceramic Tiles

Grouting is the filler that goes in the gaps between your ceramic tiles once you have affixed them to your surface. Not only does this create and attractive appearance but it also prevents dirt and grime collecting in the cracks.

Whilst grouting might seem a matter of simply filling in the cracks there are a number of tips I would like to share with you that will make the job much easier and the finish look really great.

1 – Mixing your tile grout – I tend to use ready mixed ceramic tile grout for speed. However if you do have to mix your own I suggest you mix in small quantities as this type of grout sets really quickly.

2 – Press into place – The next step is to firmly press the grout into the gaps between your tiles. Tiling professionals use a special squeegee for doing this but you can use a small sponge.

3 – Clean of the excess – Whilst the grout is still wet wipe away any excess that gets on to the surface of the tiles with either a clean damp cloth or sponge. It is best to clean as you go along as once the grout sets it is hard to remove.

4 – Detailing – To give the grouting a really professional finish I normally take either a small piece of dowelling or have even used a pen lid and run it down each grout line. This sets the grout back from the surface of the tile and also evens it out, creating a stunning effect.

5 – Final Polish – Make sure you leave the grout to dry and polish the whole area using either a clean cloth or screwed up newspaper.

As I mentioned earlier generally I prefer to use ready made grout in order to save time. When fitting bathroom ceramic tiles you may want to use an epoxy-based grout for waterproofing that will need mixing.
