Chamillionaire Mixtapes-the Early Years
The first Chamillionaire mixtapes came out in 1998 and he began circulating them through the hip hop community of Texas. He finally met Michael 5000, a popular DJ in the Houston area, when he was out promoting his tapes with fellow rapper Paul Wall. Michael 5000 let the rappers freestyle on his popular radio show and they were such a hit that he began frequently including them on his own rap mixtapes. After gaining some local fame and appearing on more Chamillionaire mixtapes, the rapper decided to start his own group called The Color Changin’ Click. Their debut album, Get Ya Mind Correct, was released in 2002 and sold about 150,000 copies. It was critically acclaimed as well and was nominated for the title of Independent Album of The Year by Source Magazine. In 2005, Chamillionaire finally inked a deal with a major label, Universal Records, and put out his solo debut. The album was called The Sound Of Revenge and it debuted at number ten on the Billboard 200 Chart. The lead single from the album, “Ridin’”, featured Krayzie Bone from Bone Thugz N Harmony and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Chamillionaire mixtapes were vital to the rapper’s early success because they helped him get the attention he needed in the industry. After circulating his tapes for awhile, his group released a successful independent album and he was able to make a major label solo debut.
