Changing The "sick" Standard To The "wellness" Standard

From Focusing on “Sick” to Focusing on “Wellness”

Concierge medicine is about preventative health. It’s about creating environments that cater to preventing illness, rather than waiting for it to happen and then diagnosing it with expensive prescriptions and treatments. Many look at concierge doctors as those who are greedy and simply wanting more money. But, in reality, concierge doctors want to do what they went to school for; they want to build relationships with their patients, saving them thousands in prescriptions and treatments by preventing illness and focusing on “wellness.”

I read an interesting article today on Entrepeuner.com entitled ‘A Model for Healthcare Reform: Opting Out’ by Jeff Rundles. He hit it right on the nose, and put concierge medicine into a perspective that isn’t very often shared. All too often you hear that concierge doctors are in it for the money. They want to work less and make more. Signature MD can honestly tell you that is not the case.

Rundles writes that thousands of doctors “are simply opting out of the "sick" model of practice in overcrowded conditions, and moving to a "wellness"-based practice with fewer patients that allows doctors to spend more time with each one and a concentrate on managing health.”

A big pull for many concierge doctors is the extra time they get with patients. Since obesity is one of our nation’s greatest health concerns, many concierge doctors are happy to be able to actually sit down with their patients and talk to them about the conditions and diseases that can be completely preventable if their weight is managed properly. Other health concerns such as smoking, excessive drinking, and poor eating habits are also discussed and preventative measures are more likely to be taken with a concierge doctor than a common practice physician.

Instead of waiting for the sick to come pouring through the door, concierge doctors can prevent the illness from beginning. Managing health rather than treating sick is what most doctors go to school to do, and with concierge medicine they can actually practice what they are passionate about.

According to Entrepuener.com, doctors are able to practice medicine the way they have always envisioned it--in a patient-centered, wellness and preventative-focused manner--the way they were trained. Concierge medicine is truly a win-win for both doctors and patients.
