Characteristics And Commonalities In Great Leaders

Recently a friend of mind asked me, why is it, I want to be successful at what I do? And like most of us, I to have my vision and my goals in life. The fundamental purpose for my writing is to share with people the wealth of experiences I have accumulated, in the past thirty four years in leadership applied in organizational development and management. My experiences’ though quite rewarding and at times very accelerating it hasn’t been easy; and that is why I want to share my experiences so that I may bring some enlightenment with approaches to solving problems. If one could learn from me some of the problems I have encountered and those I’ve seen in my business as an organizational consultant; then one could be in a pretty decent position from making the kinds of mistakes that could stop you right on your tracks from succeeding.

Please try to understand this is not blue gloom writing but rather to bring to your attention common uniqueness of high performing people and leaders share. This may sound a little strange to you, but if you think about it for a second one will notice that a common trait of high performing people is that they like problems. How could that be one might ask; well, high performing leaders love solving problems, they love challenges and the success that derives from such a manifestation. If you take a look at leaders who perform well, it is rare to find one who is working for a non-productive organization. Most of your high level accomplished minded individuals work for organizations that also perform at a high level and would go crazy working with a low performing organization. I love the story of a legendary football Coach by the name of Vince Lombardi, who taught some mediocre ball players and converted them into high performing individuals. The Coach saw a problem with a bunch of players that didn’t belief in themselves and taught his player to have faith in themselves, work hard, stay focus, be discipline and they will succeed, and, succeed they did. Therefore, the Green Bay Packers also became a high performing organization, along with high performing people, brought about by a high performing coach who is legendary in leadership principals and of course football. Green Bay packers under Coach Lombardi, 5 NFL title and 2 Super Bowls in a roll – wow! That is success.

A common personal characteristic of high performing leaders is that, they are true disciplinarians in the ethics of hard work, persistency and staying true to one’s personal vision. They are very clear on what they are seeking and they always put in long hours to perfect their talents as they are highly driven to succeed. It is important to understand that high driven people are not on the norm; they fall in the above average category of ambition. Once, one reaches the level of success; it is important to understand they quite honestly rank with an elite group, from a population perspective – a successful leader will become the cream of the crop, usually somewhere in the top 16% to 15% of an aggregated population.

Usually high performing leaders have a high level of drive, many love their work so much that they actually love their work and miss it when they are not working at what they love; as they are energized and ready to compete. Compete, at selling more products, winning a golf tournament, and succeeding in their business. High performing leaders love to be at the helm. They crave for responsibility they love being in the forefront of change and being victorious.
