It’s a great strategy that may possibly yield incredible profits. Yet, if you enter into this precarious marketing world blindly, you will not only squander your energy and time, but you could ultimately devastate the integrity of your business and your name. In order to avoid this from happening, you need to avoid certain mistakes.

The biggest mistake people make when using Twitter for promotion is to use it send out spam, tweets that will be ignored by the Twitter community due to their nature. Think of your tweets as dinner conversation at the table – they should be short, simple, but powerful in the information conveyed. Twitterers are there for social entertainment, it’s supposed to be fun. When they realize they’re being spammed by a sales pitch from a stranger, they are going to feel a sense of irritation almost instantly. Never to appear as a general advertising gimmick, your tweets should be helpful to your specific following. Your tweets should be helpful and of some benefit to other people. But that doesn’t mean you can never promote to them. Once you have shared sufficient quality concepts, you may market something. If most of your tweets are helpful ideas and suggestions, and you recommend a product here and there, you’re going to be off to a good start and the results will start adding up. Gentle persuasion from a guest come for dinner will always go further than a suit-and-briefcase salesman. This is, after all, a social network. With that in mind, be sociable. Be a person -not a corporation. A face, not a business. If you are able to be totally real and helpful in your approach, people will be willing to buy.

Never forget that Twitter is much more than just a tool; it’s actually a real community. This is what makes it such a valuable medium for promoting a business or product. However, there are still a lot of marketers who insist on doing it just “one way” and refuse to participate in the community. Avoiding this mistake is pretty easy though; just keep in mind that you will have to give in order to receive. You should make it a point to actually interact with people. Make sure you keep tabs on other tweeters and are following them; make sure to send the right answers back on their tweets, and make sure you’re involved with tweet threads. If you want to achieve positive results, then becoming an active member of the community and working with other Tweeters is the only way to accomplish this. It’s easy to see why you should do this – if you want to succeed on Twitter, you need to be sure to interact with people who think you are interesting enough to follow. So, how can you do this? By making sure to give people what they really want, by writing tweets that they enjoy reading. Remember, it needs to offer them some sort of benefit. That’s how you avoid the most common mistakes people make on Twitter when trying to market products.
