Children’s Entertainers Role Model – Gilbert Fisher
When one’s child has a party one can look for a children’s entertainer who can impart some educational knowledge as well as entertain. Every country has a history of children’s entertainers. One such entertainer was named Gilbert Dempster Fisher. Born on August 18th, 1906 at Bishopton, Renfrewshire, Fisher was a Scottish broadcaster who achieved notoriety among children’s entertainment for ten years. Most notably was Fisher’s work in nature studies. Gilbert Dempster Fisher started a program called ‘Hut-Country Walks’ on BBC radio in 1948 that would feature two children exploring the Hut County with Fisher’s onscreen persona, The Hut Man. The Hut County program became quite popular with children and families. The nature show was broadcast in a variety of Scottish schools. Fisher would travel from school to school starting in April 1954 he first visited Belmont School Camp. It was there he gave several nature walks and took children along with him to experience the Hut Walks first hand. Fisher even went as far to organize a Nature Study Club, taking members on natural history tours of the surrounding countryside. The final episode of the Hut County program was broadcast in June of 1956. Fisher’s final broadcast was aired in August of 1956 when he was appointed director-secretary of the Royal Zoological of Scotland. It was there he continued to help children explore and learn about nature. Fisher continued to help broaden children’s mind and experiences until his retirement in 1971. Gilbert Dempster Fisher was responsible for a number of publications in his time such as A Number of Things: Verses for Children, The Hut Man’s Book, and Adventure in the Hut County, Hut County Days and Your Nature Book are just some of the names of these publications. Gilbert Dempster Fisher died on July 11th, 1985 at age 78. He left behind a legacy of naturist activities and reports geared towards younger children in a way to promote awareness of their world around them. This is just one example of many children’s entertainers who add to the ever growing population of our youth, and a good example of a person who can entertain and educate children. Even today schools in Scotland air his radio broadcast and use his programs in their nature education and life sciences programs and classes. Seek out a children’s entertainer for your party that can rise to the challenge.
