Chilean Wine Sales Soar In The Wake Of The Mine Rescue

The rescue of 33 miners from a mine in Chile earlier in 2010 was an event that was celebrated around the globe. It has certainly had a huge impact on the miners and their families and even on the country as a whole. Attention to the country has been beneficial for many industries, and among these has certainly been the wine industry. Demand for Chilean wine has gone up around the world, with sales increasing some twenty five percent since the rescue aired live around the world.

Compared to the same time period last year, sales figures are even more impressive. The sale of Chilean wine is up some three hundred twenty five percent over the 2009 figures for the same time span. For many wine sellers in the aftermath of the disaster, Chilean wine made up a significant percentage of wine sales, and it is hoped that this increased visibility helps to increase knowledge of the wine in the future as well. There is no doubt that the increased interest in wine from the area brought many sellers and wine aficionados to the Harpers Wine and Spirit’s Chile Summit this November.

One area of winemaking that has gained a great deal of notoriety in the wake of the Chilean mine disaster is organic and sustainable wine. Chile has a large market for organic wines, and find an easy time producing it because the climate and landscape make it easy for vineyard owners to avoid the need for chemicals. These organic wines offer higher levels of polyphenols, antioxidants, and reservatrol, and have certainly drawn a great deal of interest within the wine community as of late. Chilean wine had only just started to make a real appearance within many circles of the wine community until the event transpired.

The long term impact of the Chilean mine disaster remains to be seen, but there is no doubt that the short term impact has been significant. Chilean wine has seen an incredible resurgence in popularity, and it is one that many winemakers are hoping will propel the wine into the public eye and have a permanent increase on sales. Chilean wine is looking to be taken as seriously as its French counterparts, and there is little doubt that this newfound exposure will help a great deal. Many will be eagerly awaiting to see what the long term impact will be.
