Choices After High School Graduation
Your choices will include pursuing further education at trade or technical schools, community colleges, or other colleges and universities. Or you might decide to travel, just for the experience, or to work or study abroad. You could also decide to join the work force directly, or possibly remain within it, if you already have a job. The choices are many, and they are yours to make. You will likely be facing a lot of external pressures on top of the pressures you put upon yourself. Family may have hopes and dreams for you, ones based on your own prior achievements or stated goals, or ones that have far more to do with their own missed opportunities than your wishes. Friends and classmates may influence you as well, wanting you to join them, perhaps as a way of validating their choices. What is most important, and what will enable you to be the most successful that you can be, at anything you chose to do, is for you to follow your bliss, to follow what you have interest in. You will learn more if you are motivated to learn, if you set your own goals and are making strides towards meeting them. And here’s something most people don’t tell you: it’s okay to change your mind. It’s okay to decide to work but then return to school. It’s okay to take time to travel and settle to a job somewhere along the way. It’s okay to go to school and discover you have less passion for your selected field than you realized and to change your major, or your career path, as you go. Being open to opportunities will help you make the most of them, and in the end, no one has to live your life, with the consequences, positive or negative, of the choices you have made along the way.
