Choose Quality Based Horizontal And Vertical Windlasses

All anchor windlasses and capstans are visually attractive with simple installation and smooth usage. Now days there are two types of Windlass available in market and lots of windlasses distributors in Australia, New Zealand and other various countries like USA, UK, Russia, Canada and UAE. A horizontal windlass tends to have 90 degrees chain wrap, seating 2 or 3 links, which can “skip”. This may mean slipping chain in foul sea conditions. A vertical windlass tends to have 180 degrees of chain wrap providing a more secure chain “grab” of 3 to 5 links. Vertical windlasses tend to take up less deck space, but must be matched to deck thickness. The motor and gearbox are fitted below decks where space must be provided in a “wet locker” space. The motor can be serviced without removal of the windlass, but the motor lives in the damp area. Vertical windlasses specifically are not recommended to use as a boat’s securing point. In other words if your vessel is under tow it is not recommended to loop the tow line over the gypsy.

Advantages and disadvantages of Windlass

The advantages of the vertically mounted windlasses is that they allow the anchor rode to come aboard at almost any angle (see drawing below), they take up considerably less deck space and the motor and gear box are below deck, protected from the weather.

The disadvantages are that they are harder and more costly to install and service. They also take up room below deck in the forepeak where space may be at a premium.

The advantages of the horizontally mounted windlasses are that they are offered in a wider range of gypsy variations, are easier to install and service and do not interfere with space in the forepeak.

The disadvantages are that the anchor rode must travel in a direct line from the bow roller to the windlass often necessitating the windlass to be mounted off center which sometimes looks out of place. They also take up considerably more deck space and totally exposed to the elements. Often the defining factor in choosing between vertical and horizontal is the number of anchors to be handled, the number of bow rollers and how they line up. Usually a boat with one bow roller on the center line will require a vertical and two bow rollers will require for Horizontal Windlass Horizontal windlasses.
