Choosing Nursery Furniture
The basic furniture for a nursery is pretty straightforward. You can get by with a crib, a changing table and a dresser or chest for storage. Optional but important elements include a rocking chair, perhaps a daybed, and one or more lamps on tables. A toy box is also an excellent idea, or perhaps some shelves for storage. All of these elements need to harmoniously combine in order to create the nurturing environment your child needs for proper growth and development. The crib is the single most important element in your child’s room. After all, your new baby will spend the majority of their time in it, so it needs to be not only sturdy, but safe and comfortable. Do not skimp here – spend a bit extra and get a solid crib from a reputable manufacturer, one that is fully compliant with all applicable federal rules and regulations. Select one that has meets or exceeds safety rules, and do the research beforehand to make sure your new crib is both safe and cozy. Once the crib is secured, choosing the other furnishings is simple. You are looking for sturdy, well built furniture that is convenient for you to use, and colorful and stimulating for your child. Bright colors and safely rounded edges are key elements. The changing table should have a comfortable, stain-resistant pad, an attached table for diapers, powder and lotions, and hopefully some storage. The dresser or chest should be big enough to hold all of baby’s clothing and accessories, and there should be plenty of space on shelves or in a box for toys and stuffed animals. Even though babies are small, their requirements can be very substantial. All the furniture needs to fit comfortably inside baby’s room. Leave enough space for you to move around easily, and also consider the future and give baby some crawling space as well. Children grow up fast, and before you know it they’ll be climbing out of their crib and exploring. Take the long view and purchase furniture that will not only serve now, but for any future babies to come.
