Choosing The Best Leapster Charger

The Leapfrog Leapster Multimedia Learning System comes fairly self-contained as a handheld game console but like many other handheld gaming systems can mow through batteries very quickly. One of the most essential Leapster accessories to purchase with the console itself is some a device to recharge the system.

The Leapster takes 6AA batteries which don't tend to last long. The machine uses an LCD screen which sucks battery power very quickly. Not only that, but kids love the Leapster so have a tendency to play it all the time. Buying batteries for kids gaming systems can get very expensive very quickly, especially if you want you your child to get the most out the system, which was no doubt the purpose of buying it in the first place.

To avoid a level of resentment seeping into your child's use of the Leapster, where you begin to feel they are "wasting batteries", there are three options available. Leapfrog has released both a regular AC adaptor and a recharging station to use specifically for the Leapster and there are rechargeable AA batteries on the market that work well with the system.

The first option is to simply purchase an AA battery recharging system and recharge those as required. The batteries can be used for other machines, but that may not be the point if you want your child to use them in the Leapster all the time. The individual batteries also have a tendency to get lost or mixed up with non-rechargeable batteries, especially if handled by younger children.

The regular Leapfrog Leapster AC adaptor is simply a plug and cord which connects from the Leapter system to the electricity socket in the wall. It is the simplest option that requires the child to play near a wall outlet, connected to power. The great thing is it has a long cord so kids can be fairly mobile when playing the Leapster and it works with all Leapster products on the market. The downside is that it is not so good for travelling.

Another option available to Leapster users is the Recharging Station. The recharger uses a battery that can be charged using electricity then removed and placed into the Leapster, giving at least 6 hours play before needing another recharge. The Leapster recharger also comes with an AC adaptor that can be used to power the Leapster directly. Each recharge takes approximately four hours to recharge fully.

Any of the above options is preferable to constantly buying disposable batteries which is an expensive option for the wallet and the planet.
