Can you choose what your child's sex should be? The answer is yes. It is very possible nowadays with the current science and technology available. But in the old days, the parents would often refer to the ancient Chinese Baby Gender Prediction Chart. In this chart, the chinese have plotted the age against the months when the child is conceived or when you think you are pregnant for one month already. Although accuracy is yet to be proven, some still consider it to be effective up to this day.
When we are talking about gender selection in the field of science, the most accurate methods can be very expensive, it involves invasive infertility treatments, fertility drugs and its side effects. Some states and countries would require those who wants gender selection techniques to be married. Some will not consider someone who is already beyond the age limit of childbearing.
Gender selection has gained much attention and controversy throughout the years. Some consider this to be unethical, immoral, and in some countries and states to be immoral and socially unacceptable.
While most think of the moral options, most of those who believe in choosing the sex of their baby considers the medical benefits such as avoiding sex-linked diseases like hemophilia wherein males suffer a blood condition that lacks clotting characteristic. But for some, they just want a balance in their family which is one of the controversial issues if it is right to be choosing your baby's gender. In the United Kingdom, United States and Australia, gender selection is acceptable.
There are two ways that can make gender selection possible.
Sperm Selection
The Sperm has the X and Y chromosome while the Egg cell of the female has 2 X chromosomes. When the X of the male and the X of the female combines, a female is produced. When Y and X combines, a male is produced. In Sperm Selection, the sperm's X and Y Chromosomes are separated. The chosen chromosome is inseminated into the woman.
This method is highly cost effective and can be done in a home or a clinic. However, the success rate is very low.
Embryo Screening
In this method the embryo or the child is created outside of the woman's womb making use of the old In-Vitro Fertilization. When the desired gender is achieved, they will implant it into the womb.
The chances that this method will be successful is nearly 100 %. However, it is more expensive than the Sperm Selection Method and this cannot be done in the comfort of your home should you wish to do so.
There are other ways in making gender selection possible. There are natural ways also if you are considering to have a boy or a girl without going through medical techniques. However, the effectiveness of natural ways are yet to be proven. But when moral and social issues are your main concern, then you have to choose wisely and be ready for the positive and negative effects of our choice.
